That formula up there is proof that I've been spending too much time at work solving algebraic equations. However, yes, I saw Harry Potter again in the theaters over the weekend and cried way more than the first two times. It was kind of funny actually. This was the first time I got to see it with the roomies so it was another special Potter moment. Speaking of which, I got my Pottermore name! Did you?
I finally finished reading Beastly which was quite different than the movie. I'm not entirely sure why they changed it so much since the book laid it all out pretty well. Just the same, it was a fun read. Now I'm debating either re-reading The Golden Compass or diving into the second Percy Jackson book. I can't decide! There are only 12 days left to back Vizcaya. That's not very many, but I have faith! Tell your friends about it and donate anything that you can! It all helps! I have some re-writing to work on now, but I'll leave you with a fun picture of the crazy kitty. Why? Because life is all about fun kitty pictures! Today I headed down to the local Borders to try and stock up on some books. It's sad that they're closing down, but I'm pretty excited about getting books for a discount. I also got a $4 used copy of Salinger's Franny And Zooey at the Famer's Market right outside, so it was a very good day for book buying. I'm hoping to get back down there before they officially close the doors so I can get books when they're down to 60-80% off. Yesterday I finally created my Tumblr! I'm excited and scared all at once. I'm afraid of going overboard with it, so I'm taking my time and still deciding what's the first photo I want to post on it. Here's the link if you guys want to follow along - http://riveralina.tumblr.com/ I also created an ad for Vizcaya on Kickstarter! What do you guys think?
I think it looks kinda cool. Feel free to use it if you have a site or blog! We went to the midnight show at Universal City Walk where I knew there would be an abundance of Snapes, Hermiones, Harrys, Dementors, and a very convincing Mad Eye Moody among others. The last movie was everything I wanted it to be and I sat there absorbing every moment and scene. I adored it and knew I'd be seeing it more than once in the theater for sure. The best part, however, came at the end of the movie where we were given an amazing surprise. They opened the park just for us so we could go to Hogwarts and drink some butterbeer in celebration of the midnight showing! We were greeted on a red carpet by the park employees who cheered for us as we entered Hogsmeade. It was truly an unreal experience. I took a few pics, of course, to share with you guys! In non-Potter news, I got to see one of my favorite bands ever perform this week. Better Than Ezra!!! I think I've seen them in concert well over ten times and I wasn't about to miss their free show in Baltimore. Unfortunately, they were carding at the front and my roommate's ID is expired so they didn't let us in. But I'm not one to let that deter me. We headed to the back where I enjoyed the show from behind the stage. As an added bonus, we got a wave from Kevin Griffin as he made his way to the stage. Score! So that's been my fun these past two weeks, but outside of that it's all about focusing on the big Vizcaya project. Please spread the word, and back the project if you haven't yet!!!
Are you thinking of donating to my self-publishing endeavor, but would like a sneak peek to know for sure what you're backing? Then look no further. I've uploaded the first chapter of Vizcaya! I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you like it enough to donate! 32 Days Left!
Vizcaya: Chapter 1 So my first big writing project is underway! I made the decision last year to try and experiment with the whole self-publishing idea. I chose Vizcaya to be the book to receive the self-publishing treatment and yesterday I launched the Kickstarter.com page to hopefully help fund the entire thing! I'm so excited about it, and I hope you guys are too. Please feel free to donate and spread the word to anyone who you think might be interested in backing a creative endeavor!
Check out the site above for my video and information about the project! Aside from working hard on Vizcaya, I've been trying to catch up on some reading and managed to finish a book in less than 24 hours for the first time in forever. The book that prompted this miraculous feat is called Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. This book is amazing! If you haven't read it, then run to your nearest bookstore and get it now! It's a page turner, but more importantly than that, it's got this amazing emotion in it that I can't even describe. I was completely absorbed into the lead character's mind as I went on this journey with him and I found myself crying at one point. I won't say what point because I don't want to give anything away, but trust me, go read this book now! And last but not least, we're less than 48 hours away from the midnight showing of the last Harry Potter movie! I have my tickets and I'm ready! But I'm so sad at the same time. :( I don't want it to end! Happy Potter viewing everyone! Oh wait, there's one more thing. I succumbed to Twitter. Follow me! @TheLinaRivera First of all, I have to mention that I just saw Super 8 today and loved it! If you haven't seen it yet, go! Even though it was directed by J.J. Abrams, it's a total Spielberg film reminiscent of E.T., Close Encounters, and Jaws even. Plus it reminded me a bit of Goonies which made it that much more awesome. I'm hoping I can go see it again. So about a month ago, I went ghost hunting in Ellicot City, MD. It's supposed to be the most haunted city in all of Maryland, so naturally I decided to go down there and get a bit of inspiration for Winter Lakes. While I didn't run into any paranormal friends while I was there, I did take many pictures, and more importantly, I got uber-inspired to start on the second book of the Winter Lakes series. I'll share with you guys some of the more "creepy" pictures of the trip. Do you guys see anything out of the ordinary? I finally put up the seascape pictures on my Photography page. I was only able to put up the ones that I had previously scanned or that I took on my digital camera, which means there are no Puerto Rico pictures. That seems almost criminal. I'll have to add some eventually, but going through all those pictures just now made me really miss the ocean. :(
I submitted a short story to The Writer short story contest so cross your fingers! It was a fun, little story about this rather strange picnic I attend last year. I know that there are some other short story contests ending in a day or two, but I'm probably going to miss those deadlines in favor of working on some bigger writing projects. On the entertainment front I'm a little too excited about two upcoming things. First, have you guys seen the new Harry Potter trailer?! My roommate and I turned off the lights and let it play and got so engrossed in it that I almost cried. I can't wait to see it, but part of me doesn't want it to actually arrive beause then it's over. I haven't come to terms with that yet. I'm also excited about the adaptation for The Perks of Being a Wallflower. They start filming soon and I'm really curious to see if Chbosky stays true to the book (since he did write it after all) and how he brings it to life. It's such an interesting book and deals with all kinds of issues that I don't want them to gloss over and take out. Either way I'm excited about it, and no, not just because it stars Hermione Granger. :) Alright, I'm off to write. I'm alive! I know I'm horrible at updating this blog, but having just moved up to Maryland and working day and night to try and pay rent while I keep looking for a full-time, permanent job, has pretty much taken up all my time. I've been doing a temporary, freelance project that has afforded me a little breathing room for the month, so I'm in here updating and trying to get caught up on all my writing deadlines coming up. There are so many cool contests and fellowships with deadlines at the end of February and early March! It's exciting, but it also means that it's time to buckle down.
You know what I wish sometimes? That the following would happen to me: From Wikipedia: Having written several long stories, Harper Lee located an agent in November 1956. The following month at the East 50th townhouse of her friends Michael Brown and Joy Williams Brown, she received a gift of a year's wages from them with a note: "You have one year off from your job to write whatever you please. Merry Christmas."[6] She quit her job and devoted herself to her craft. Within a year, she had a first draft. Working with J. B. Lippincott & Co. editor Tay Hohoff, she completed To Kill a Mockingbird in the summer of 1959. Published July 11, 1960, To Kill a Mockingbird was an immediate bestseller and won great critical acclaim, including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961. It remains a bestseller with more than 30 million copies in print. Could you guys imagine?! A year off, paid, to write a future Pulitzer Prize winning novel? Where do I sign up? Of course, I'd have to come up with a Pulitzer winning concept first, but details details. Since it's a new year, I think I'm going to change the layout of the site. A little change is always good. I'm also going to attempt to put up the rest of the photos that I've promised. The problem is that I need to go through the photos in my new place and figure out what made the move and didn't. Then I need to scan the appropriate images. This might be more work than I anticipated. :\ About a month ago I finished reading Melissa Anelli's book, Harry: A History, which is an awesome book written about the Harry Potter phenomena. Anelli has a way with words and I'm serious when I say that I felt every emotion as if I was experiencing her crazy journey with her. If you're a writer, then you need to go read that book now. Like right now! I want to read it again, but I'm in the middle of three books so it's going to have to wait. Maybe I'll read it as a reward for finishing one of the books I'm currently reading... Well it's done. The roommates and I have packed up the U-Haul and headed north. We arrived in Maryland under less than auspicious circumstances. I sprained my foot, caught the flu from my brother, and our U-Haul tire blew out. Yikes! Now, however, we've begun to settle in, and, more importantly, we now have the Internet again!
This means I can come back online and update things like the books I've read (Hunger Games anyone?) and new photos I've taken. I've also started writing a new sci-fi sort of novel (Is that vague or what?) that I'm a tiny bit obsessed with. Of course my first priority is to find a job, and then catch up with all of my critiques. Finding a new critique group here will have to wait until I've sent out the ones I owe to my more than patient former critique group members. Thank you guys for understanding, but thank you more for letting me read your fun and awesome work. So stay tuned and I'll get in here to update things plus tell you guys my brilliant new idea. No really. It's super brilliant. Promise! |
